Parc des Volcanes
The highlight of a tour to Volcanoes National Park is a mountain gorilla trek .As part of its strategy for sustainable tourism , the Rwanda government allows a limited number of tourists to a few "habituated gorilla families " under strictly controlled conditions. The charge for a pass for a non Rwandan resident is $500. This is an ideal opportunity to explore the local area. Rwanda’s Mountain Gorillas
one of the world's biggest mountain gorilla population lives in the Virungas. This had fallen to only around 350 in the tragic and chaotic period of the Rwandan genocide, due to loss of habitat which was cleared for agricultural purposes
Today, over 20 gorilla groups roam freely between Rwanda, Uganda and DRC.
Mountain Gorilla Trekking in the Virungas

Trekking parties gather at 7am daily at the Park Office. The gorilla trek spans between 1-4 hours up the mountain, tour guides allocate trekking routes to tourists to match their age and fitness. The reward is usually up to an hour spent within 10-15 yards of a gorilla family.
Each trekking party of 7 tourists is accompanied by tour guides, trackers, porters and two Rwandan soldiers
Strict precautions are enforced to prevent visitors carrying food or drink near the gorillas, or infecting them with diseases.
Other Activities in the Volcanoes National Park
While the Virungas are most famous for their mounatin gorillas, other reasons to visit include:
- Guided treks to view habituated groups of rare Golden Monkeys.
- Birdwatching and nature walks.
- Guided climbs to the rim of the crater of the dormant Karisimbi volcano
- Visiting the tomb of Diane Fossey, the naturalist who made Rwanda’s gorillas famous, but was murdered in 1985.
Travel and Accomodation
Volcanoes park is about a 3 hours drive north west of Kigali .Accomodation facilities include :Kinigi Guesthouse just 5 minutes from the Park Headquarters, or in hotels in nearby Ruhengeri town.
