NYUNGWE NATIONAL PARK
Nyungwe National Park constitutes the largest montane forest in central Africa , covering about 1,000 km 2 . There are 275 bird species and 13 primates and over 240 species of treesNyungwe forest park includes a wide range of micro habitats. These vary from tall canopied forest, and thickly wooded areas of shorter trees and scrub, to bamboo forest, marsh and open herbaceous slopes.
Nyungwe’s Bird Species
Nyungwe Forest Park boasts of over 275 species of birds of which at least 24 are only found in the Central African Highlands. Among the most amazing bird species are;
- Different species of Turaco (Ruwenzori, Black-billed and the brilliant Great Blue Turaco with its black crest and green breast).
- The Cinnamon-Breasted Bee Eater.
- Two Hornbills (Black and White Casqued, and Crowned).
- Thirteen sunbirds, including the stunning Purple-Breasted Sunbird.
Nyungwe's Chimpanzees and Monkeys
Twenty percent of all African primate species can be found in Nyungwe Park, including:
- Chimpanzees.
- Black and White Colobus
- Grey-cheeked Mangabeys
- L'Hoest's or Mountain Monkeys
- Owl Faced Monkeys
- Mona Monkeys
- Blue Monkeys
- Golden Monkeys
- Red Tailed Monkeys
- Vervet Monkeys.
- Eastern Needle-clawed Galagos.
- Greater Bushbabies.
- Olive Baboons.
Neighbouring Attractions
On the western boundary, around Gisakura are the carpeted bright green tea plantations. visitors can have arranged visits to the factory.From Uwinka there are breahtaking panoramic views of Lake Kivuthe and the Virunga Mountains .
Park Fees
There is a daily park entrance charge of US$20. There are additional charges for primate safari treks or guided forest walks on the excellent network of trails.
Accommodation
Gisakura guesthouse offers visitors a simple, comfortable and clean accomodation .Other accomodation facilities include campsites at Uwinka, on Mount Bigugu, and on one of the forest trails. Campers are advised to take their own water.
