Akagera, with all its complex mix of terrains, vegetation and animal life…
is a very special place on earth, a place to preserve at all costs for future generations.”- Jean Pierre Vande,
Akagera National Park is Rwanda’s renowned Savanna reserve. In comparison to the other parts of the country, the area is relatively warm and low-lying, the park was established in 1934 to protect an area covering 2,500 square kilometers (965 square miles) By the 1960s, the Park formed part of a much larger ecosystem that included Uganda's Kikagati Game Reserve, Lake Mburo National Park, and rangeland areas north to the Katonga River. Across the Akagera River to the east, the ecosystem extended into Tanzania's Ibanda and Rumanyika Game Reserves, with corridors of relatively unsettled wood and bushland linking these areas to the Biharamulo and Burigi Game Reserves farther south, between Lake Victoria and the Rwanda border.

A large percentage of the large mammals of the East Africa can be found in Akagera Park. Although some species like elephants and lions are less prevalent in Akagera than in some larger and more famous reserves, Akagera more than compensates for this by its breathtaking scenery and vast landsacpe.
Also present, but less frequently seen, are:
Bird Life
